One of the most characteristic ‘bars’ in Colombo is the Castle Hotel in Masjid Jamia Road. A bar in Sri Lanka is a big noisy hall with simple tables and chairs, a strong alcohol smell and filled with cigarette smoke. Populated with only male customers, it gets noisier in due of the evening as the quantity of alcohol exceeds the barrier of ‘drunkenship’. Bites always accompany the drinking session and mostly smoking. Beer and arack, the local hard drink, are the commonly consumed drinks. Although not forbidden, ladies are not supposed to visit bars. Women in Sri Lanka usually don’t drink alcohol and don’t smoke, but times are changing in Colombo, especially among middle and upper class people. At the moment the Castle Hotel is closed due to the fact that the building is going to be demolished
