Dehiwala Junction is the center of this big suburb immediately south of Colombo. It is easy recognizable because of the fly-over which was built to ease the busy traffic on the Galle Road, but the increase of vehicles is going faster than the road and fly-over can bear. More drastic measurements need to be taken to control the situation.
Dehiwala is not a tourism destination; it is more a business and residential area. The only zoo in Sri Lanka is based in this suburb, but a new zoo, which is more based on the modern requirements for an animal friendly zoological garden, is under construction adjacent to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.
In the same street where the current zoo is situated there is a surprisingly interesting puppet museum, the puppets being used in the past by traveling puppet theatre groups through the country (see separate description).
The Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is located in the eastern part of Dehiwala. You can hire a push bike and cycle around the lake on a special cycle- and walking track. Nearby is a famous temple, called Bellanwila (see separate description). Moreover there are several interesting temple complexes to be found in Dehiwala.
