A children’s attraction and for those interested in zoo’s, the Dehiwala Zoo is worth a visit. The zoo has quite a big collection of animals from all over the world. Particularly the aquarium contains more than 500 species of aquatic life and gives it a prominent position in South Asia regarding sea life exposition. Besides the aquarium the collection of reptiles also consists of a large number of cobras, tortoises and crocodiles. In the afternoons a show is given with elephants for the public, which always attracts a lot of visitors. The Zoo still contains several animals behind bars, while in the meantime facilities for animals in a more natural environment are being created, which is more according to a modern approach of today’s architecture of zoo’s. The Dehiwala Zoo, which always attracts a huge crowd, especially during school holidays, is situated about 10 km south of Colombo Fort. By public transportation it is easy accessible by bus from Pettah, Fort, Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya. Get off at Dehiwala Junction and take a 3-wheeler from there. The Zoo is open between 08.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m.
