In 1923 the wealthy business family MacamMarkar constructed the Galle Face I building and within the following 10 years the Galle Face Court II, it was their entry in the real estate business. The striking building with the dome on top is a landmark, situated opposite the Galle Face Hotel and facing Galle Face Green. It is the northern most tip of Kollupitiya. The spaces in the arcade of the buildings are commercial, shops and restaurants, while the upper floors are residential areas. The family-company is well known for its spectacular gems trade. They ever sold the biggest facetted blue sapphire in the world and they still possess the second and third biggest blue sapphire in the world, all were mined in Sri Lanka. (see also Stamboul Place).
