Although Sri Lanka is not ranked in the top countries for golfing, it has some excellent facilities to offer. There are four 18-holes golf courses: the two oldest are the Nuwara Elya Golf Club and the Royal Colombo Golf Club, while the latest are the newly, in 2006 opened Water’s Edge Golf Club near Colombo and the Victoria Golf & Country Club, east of Kandy. The ones in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy are situated within a stunning mountainous landscape. The climate is also cooler because of the altitude. The Colombo golf grounds are totally different from each other. The Royal Colombo Golf Club, established in 1880, has the charm of bygone days, when the British were ruling the country. The Water’s Edge Golf Club, situated near the parliament buildings, is a modern, sophisticated golf club with many posh facilities.
