A small beautifully, well maintained Roman Catholic Church prominently dominates the main junction in Slave Island, where Rifle Street comes together with the Kumaran Ratnam Mawatha. The spacious church has open doors on three sides, so that with a big crowd the congregation can also be extended to the outdoors space. On the left side in front of the church a statue can be seen of the infant Jesus. There is another one above the entrance of the premises. The church is well known because it is said that the statue has magic power. The Holy Rosery Church is maybe therefore very popular as a chosen place for wedding ceremonies too. In January 2008 a heavy bomb blast took place in front of the Nippon Hotel, which is situated opposite the church. Both the hotel and the church were heavily damaged and four people lost their lives in the blast.
