Ideal rail connection
Aluthgama is an intercity station and all trains halt here. From Aluthgama station it is the easiest way to reach the beach resort of Beruwala and Aluthgama.
On weekdays (Monday to Friday) there are eight Express trains available from Colombo to Aluthgama, on Saturday and Sundays seven, starting from as early as 06.55 a.m. up to 18.05 p.m. on weekdays and on Saturdays and Sundays from 06.10 a.m. up to 17.25 p.m. Some express trains also stop in Bentota; if not, it is also easy reachable from Aluthgama. On the station are 3 wheelers (tuk tuks) available to transport you to your final destination. (please verify the train schedule on ww.eservices.railway.gov.lk)
As Bentota and Aluthgama have a railway station where most of the express trains halt, it is a good starting point to visit Colombo, as well as Galle as an excursion destination. It is situated half way between these two cities. There are morning express trains to both cities and afternoon trains to return. It makes a day trip to both places easy. There are also many buses, but mostly they are overcrowded without any seats available.
Transfer from the airport
Highway bus - train
The cheapest way to travel from Colombo Airport to the Bentota area is by bus and train. You can take the Highway bus from the airport to the Colombo bus stand and take an express train from Maradana to Aluthgama or Bentota. From the bus stand you can take a 3 wheeler taxi to Maradana Station. The Highway bus starts somewhat left from the arrival hall on the parking lodge, you can ask at the information desk in the arrival hall. A ticket from the airport to Colombo costs Rps. 120 p.p. (Euro 0,85); a 3 wheeler from the bus stand to Maradana Station about the same price and a train ticket second class to Aluthgama Rps. 110 (Euro 0,75); based on 2 persons that will roughly be Euro 2,- per person. Although trains also depart from the nearby Fort Station, it is advisable to board the train at the starting point to be able to catch a seat.
Highway bus – (A/C) bus
From the bus stand where the Highway bus arrives (the government bus stand), as well as from the private bus stand (opposite the road) there are buses to Beruwela, Aluthgama and Bentota. There is limited space for luggage, but sometimes the driver agrees if you pay for an extra seat to store your luggage. There are both a/c minibuses and non a/c big buses running to the Bentota area. Take an express bus direction Galle or Matara; buses run in abundance. Prices are about the same as a train ticket.
There is a taxi service available between the airport and your destination in the Bentota area. This is one of the most comfortable ways to travel, but there is a higher price tag going with it; based on a 3 passengers a/c minivan it will cost you Rps. 16,500 (Euro 115). As there are no taxis lining up at the arrival hall, you have to buy a taxi ticket at a special counter in the arrival hall just after passing the customs on your left hand side.
The fastest and most special way to reach your destination in the Bentota area is by seaplane from Colombo Airport. However the scheduled flight should fit into your travel plan. The flight only takes 25 minutes and you will land right in the Bentota River, a unique experience, which will cost you about US$ 170 per person one way.
