Opened in December 2011, the Nelum Pekuna Mahinda Rajapakshe Theatre is a performing art center and a masterpiece of post-modern architecture with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. The design is based on the Lotus Pond in Polonnaruwa, built by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th Century AD. It’s really a spectacular structure (illuminated during night time), designed by the Beijing Institute of Architectural Designs (BIAD) and carried out by local architects. It is a grant by the People’s Republic of China to celebrate the long lasting friendship between the two countries. The theatre contains an auditorium with 1288 seats and an open air theatre. It is suitable for all kinds of big productions, such as musicals, opera’s, concerts, plays, but also for conferences, convocations and other big events.
