It is a big strange to see a lighthouse in a street surrounded by buildings, and even more strange because at the same time it is a clock tower. In fact it was initially built as a clocktower in 1860; the lantern for the lighthouse was added in 1865. Obviously the urban development overruled the lighthouse. The clock was made by the same company who made the Big Ben in London, but it was replaced in 1913. The Old Lighthouse, located on the junction of Chatham Street and Janadhipathi Mawatha is unique in the world, but no longer in use and currently considered as an important landmark and monument in Fort.
