Opposite the Manning Market you can see a Bodhi Tree and behind it a long covered market. It is a collection of self-employed traders, earlier illegally sitting somewhere on a pavement in Pettah, hindering pedestrians. They were victims of money lenders, organized crime and the police, because they were unlicensed. However it is so difficult for many Sri Lankans to have a normal way of living, paying the bills and getting food on the table, that it was most welcomed that the government had decided to build this Self Employees Market, bringing all these traders under one roof and get them organized in the Self Employees Union, helping them to defend their rights and interests. It has now become a top shopping place for locals and foreigners alike, also known as the Bodhiraja Mawatha Shopping arcade. You can find here any household article, toy, piece of textile, as well as vegetables and fruit. The market is illuminated during the night and it is a busy place up till 11.00 o’clock in the night.
