One of the cheapest ways to spend money your accommodation, particularly for the young crowd and backpackers, is to stay in a guesthouse or a hostel. Some hostels provide private rooms; others only offer dormitory accommodation or both. The accommodation is generally basic, either with a private or public bathroom with only cold water. Don’t expect any luxury. Although several hostels are really awesome, the quality of accommodation varies from place to place. Usually only Sri Lankan breakfast is being served and some hostels have a kitchen, where you can prepare something by yourself. In some cases it is also possible to stay in a Buddhist temple. It is not according to the Western standards, but if you don’t care so much about that and if you want to share with mainly local people, it is a nice experience and makes your trip quite affordable.
