Tangalle is beautifully situated around a bay on the southern coast of Sri Lanka between Matara and Hambantota; in fact, it is a series of bigger and smaller bays with a golden sandy beach that makes Tangalle popular. It has the most pristine beaches on the south coast, typically a destination for individual tourists. Apart from a beach resort it is also a fishing town. Moreover, it has been an important port in ancient times because of its location.
The centre of the town is situated around the bus stand. This is the area where the shops are and where you can rent a bike and have a cup of tea in a local ‘hotel’.The beaches, hotels and guesthouses are situated somewhat outside the town.
The most popular spots for sea bathing, sunbathing, swimming, surfing and also snorkeling are situated in the nearby tiny villages by the sea like Medilla, Goyambokke, Pallikaduwe, Mawella, Kudawella and Seenimodera.
