Although originated in Indonesia, the Dutch have brought the art of Batik to Sri Lanka and has now been rooted in the Sri Lankan culture. Centre of the Sri Lankan batik industry is Mahawewa, north of Negombo. In this village, several tiny batik workshops are scattered around, where you can watch the art of batik decoration on sarongs, shirts, scarves, hats, home decorations etc. Artists have found a beautiful way to express their artistic talents in this traditionally rooted form of art into a combination of classical and contemporary art. Batik is very popular among tourists. Being very comfortable to wear it is very popular as beach fashion. It is therefore widely available at shops in the major beach resorts.
