Up till recently, Sri Lanka had been one of few countries without a metered taxi service, but this is slowly changing. Most of the transportation within the country takes place by 3-wheeler (by tourists mostly called tuk tuk; locals may also call it trishuk). Although most of the hires are based on bargaining, there is an increasing number of metered 3-wheelers, mainly in Colombo. This is a big advantage for tourists, since it is hardly possible to estimate if the bargain is reasonable or not. Tourists are mostly charged with a considerable higher price than locals. It is advisable to tourists always to take a metered 3-wheeler to be sure about the correct fare and to avoid unpleasant disputes.
