Wekanda is a densely populated area with mainly Muslim inhabitants, situated between Justice Akbar Mawatha and the northern shore of Beira Lake, although it’s not sure if the small neighbourhood in the north of Slave Island also includes Wekanda. It’s a small area, but wandering through the narrow streets gives you a sense of the character of this community. Some alleys are so narrow that it’s almost like violating the privacy of the people when crossing them. Be well dressed to respect the Muslim culture when you decide to roam this area. The mainly Muslim neighbourhood has an imposing Jummah Mosque. As the land prices are rising in this area, the government sees it as a waste to keep these dwellings occupied by low income inhabitants. The population therefore will have to move from for shanti houses to make place for commercial buildings. A re-housing scheme has been proposed to the inhabitants.
